The God Series

The God Series Divine Emotions Learning How to be like God and Understanding Your True Identity In Him When we became saved, we became like God.  When we understand who we are (in Christ), we should live like it.  We can be like God by modeling His personality (the fruit of the Spirit-Galatians 5:16-26).  The fruit of the Spirit empowers us to control our emotions.  Human beings walk in their feelings, but Christians walk in the anointing of the Lord. Purpose of emotions When people struggle with relationships, it’s a result of them thinking like men (in the flesh). However, it takes faith to love like God.  Human emotions are physical catalysts that reflect what we believe. They motivate us (1 John 4:1-2), and they are for God (Romans 12:1).  People in the world have a pattern of doing what they feel.  However, you will not be an overcomer if you give in to your feelings. Emotions don’t control you; instead, they should inspire you to obey the Lord.

Galatians 5:16 (The Message Bible)

My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. Are you being led by the Spirit of God?

When life happens, you response should line up with the Word.  For example, cursing people out, fighting, and getting revenge don’t line up with the Bible.  Remember, your emotional status should be based on the fruit of the Spirit.  You don’t want your emotions to turn you against God.  Sometimes, Christians get arrogant and forget that they live in God’s grace (Mark 3:23).  As one who model’s the heavenly Father, you too are like a god, and your emotions should serve you.

Galatians 5:13-15 (The Message Bible)

13 It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. 14 For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom. 15 If you bite and ravage each other, watch out – in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then?

The Emotional Personality When people are ruled by their emotions, they see a situation and react with anger or tears.  They are known to quit (if they are not acknowledged or rewarded).  When your emotions are out of control, rebellious manifestations set in.  Christians should check those manifestations, not ignore them. For example, lack of money is rebellion against the Word of God that says you’re rich. It’s no different for healing; you have power to cast sickness out. If you have dissension in your house, that’s contrary to peace. The Word declares that you are supposed to have everything you need, so if anything in your life is opposite, then that is a rebellious manifestation.

Anger Management Anger is a primary human emotion, and its purpose is to motivate you to act when God’s will is not being done.  Therefore, we should not be angry at people (Ephesians 6:12).  Instead, divorce, murder, and greed should make us angry (Matthew 18:22, 1 Corinthians 12:20, Ephesians, 1Timothy 2:8).  Know that anger is not a defense or personal protection.

Colossians 3:7-8 (NIV)

7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

James 1:19-21 (NIV)

19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Recently in prayer, God gave me the solution to all arguments.  The Spirit of the Lord said, “Let’s not quarrel, let’s say what’s in our hearts and believe God.”  In other words, don’t fight with one another.  Each person should say what is on their hearts, then give the issue to God.  The key to controlling an argument is to control the words; then walk away (Ephesians 4:29-32).

God’s anointing is like a bubble of protection; you receive it by faith in Him and obeying His Word.  When we make this our lifestyle, we develop His fruit in our lives.  The Lord ordained for us to be rulers, and we can’t run the universe on human emotions.  The Lord’s anointing, trumps emotions every time.  We are to walk in the fullness of joy, not anger. God has given you all things, so be happy about it! Love, Dr. Joyce Oliver
